A strip of stores in Eastchester hope to reopen Tuesday after being shut down over safety concerns.

Eastchester town officials said the problem was discovered by the fire department while it was investigating a gas smell.

Fire officials found insufficient support on the building's first floor. After last week's deadly parking garage collapse in Manhattan, they weren't taking any chances.

Crews installed temporary structural support Friday morning, but there were signs on the doors stating it's unsafe to enter and entrances were taped off.

Eastchester town officials say the building now is structurally safe and good to open. Now, the business owners are waiting for Con Edison to turn the gas back on.

Santiago Ruiz says he's been with the dry cleaning business here for almost 30 years and that many customers depend on them. He says while his machines can't operate until the gas is back on, at least he's able to take orders and people can come in to pick up their clothes.

The hope is Con Ed crews will move quickly and get the businesses back up and running at some point on Tuesday.

The temporary structure that was installed will eventually need to be replaced with permanent support. That will take much longer to complete, and town officials say it will likely cost hundreds of thousands of dollars.
