Community members are coming together Tuesday to remember an Eastchester police officer that was killed in the line of duty 10 years ago.
Michael Frey, 29, was responding to a call for help at the home of Richard Sacchi Jr. on March 21, 1996. The call turned out to be an ambush and Sacchi shot Frey with a high-powered rifle from a second-floor window of his home. The bullet went through an opening in Frey?s bulletproof vest and he died instantly. A 12-hour standoff ensued and ended when Sacchi killed his grandmother, his dog and himself.
Frey is the only Eastchester police officer to die in the line of duty. There was a private wreath laying ceremony and a memorial Mass in honor of Frey at Immaculate Conception Church in Tuckahoe.
