Town of Eastchester officials on Tuesday announced the hiring of a hearing officer to investigate the longtime police chief.
Police Chief Timothy Bonci, who has served the department for more than 37 years, will be investigated for possible misconduct.
Officials did not disclose why Bonci will be investigated but say it is a personnel matter.
Residents, including retired police officers, demanded action stemming from an incident earlier this summer when Bonci's gun went missing.
Bonci's 19-year-old son, Keith Bonci, was arrested on a felony charge of criminal possession of a weapon. He is due back in court later this month.
Bonci's attorney says the gun was not loaded or operational at the time.
Bonci has not been suspended from his position.
The town says it consulted with the police advisory board before hiring hearing officer Robert Ponzini.
Bonci had no comment on the investigation.
