Embattled East Ramapo Central School District Superintendent Dr. Joel Klein announced his resignation Wednesday night.
Klein submitted his resignation at a school board meeting to the cheers of parents who have been demanding the decision for some time.
The superintendent has been under fire for what many parents call the unfair treatment of minorities and a lack of transparency in the district.
Klein will step down at the end of the month. Deborah L. Wortham will act as interim superintendent.
"We have to provide access and rigor for our students," she said. "My philosophy is, what are we doing every hour of every day to secure a great future for our students?"
Earlier in the day, a district representative said that an exciting announcement would be made at the meeting.
In September, state officials appointed state monitors to oversee the cash-strapped district.
