East Meadow Jets soar to first girls basketball county title

The seventh seeded Jets beat top-seeded Manhasset 69-66 to win the Class AA championship.

The East Meadow High School girls basketball team won its first Nassau County championship Monday night.
The seventh seeded Jets beat top-seeded Manhasset 69-66 to win the Class AA championship.
The Jets took the lead in the second quarter and built it to a 14 point lead to start the final quarter.
But Manhasset went on a 17-4 run to make it a one-point game in the final minute.
But Charlotte Viola hit two free throws with eight seconds to go to seal the win.
Viola had 18 points in all. Allie Twible had 20.
East Meadow beat all three top-seeded in the tournament on route to the championship. The team plays Westhampton Beach Sunday for the Long Island championship.
