This week we learned about a drug that is being touted as a potential breakthrough treatment that can save severely ill COVID-19 patients.

The drug, dexamethasone, is now being used at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset. And it could be used at other hospitals.

Dr. Hugh Cassiere, the director of critical care medicine at North Shore, joined News 12's Elizabeth Hashagen to discuss the treatment, and what else is being done to prepare for a possible increase in coronavirus cases.

Dr. Cassiere also spoke about NSUH's Lavender Lounge. The lounge is a place for their hospital members to decompress. This safe space is an oasis for the team to pause. The environment is welcoming, it changes to reflect the seasons, invites the team members to sit and reflect. With light snacks and a hydration station, team members are invited to slow down and begin to process the last few months, as many of them worked long hours and dealt with many COVID-19-related crises and losses.
