Doctors: Leading a healthy lifestyle can prevent strokes
Doctors tell News 12 strokes can be prevented by following several tips.
Data from Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows someone in the U.S. has a stroke every 40 seconds.
Nearly 140,000 people in the U.S. die from a stroke each year.
Prevention tips include:
-Keeping your blood pressure in check.
-Limit salt and alcohol.
-Eat a diet rich in fruits, veggies, nuts and lean protein.
-Control high cholesterol by taking statins or other medications.
-Cut out smoking.
-Exercise 20 to 30 minutes a day at least four times a day.
Risk factors for strokes include diabetes, atrial fibrillation and sleep apnea.
