The Department of Housing and Urban Development has pulled another $5 million in community block grants from Westchester.
Federal officials say they are sending the money to other communities because they have yet to resolve the ongoing fight between HUD and County Executive Rob Astorino over a 2009 fair housing settlement. HUD already withheld $7 million last year.
The city of Peekskill has lost out on more than $600,000 in community block grants, which city leaders say they would have used to fix damaged sidewalks, among other things. Mayor Frank Catalina says Astorino and HUD have to work together because his community is hurting.
The county board of legislators is working with a federal housing monitor to try and resolve this issue once and for all, but the process has been slow. Legislators say they could lose at least another $10 million in HUD funding if they do not find a way to reach an agreement with federal officials.
