Oct. 15th is the deadline for the New York Senior Citizen Property Tax Exemption. The exemption allows for local governments and school districts in New York state to give a break on the amount of property taxes paid by qualifying senior citizens.
This is different and separate from the STAR program.
Seniors 65 or older who own a one, two or three family home, a condo, or a co-op may be eligible. Seniors must meet certain income limitations and other requirements, but depending on a person’s income, they could get a tax break anywhere between 5 to 50%.
In Yonkers, the total combined income of all owners and their spouses cannot exceed $58,399.99 for the 2024 tax year to receive the reduction.
Income limitations can vary by municipalities.
