One day after Mount Vernon Mayor Ernie Davis pleaded guilty to not paying his taxes, many are asking if the longtime official will step down from his office.
Davis admitted to failing to file federal income taxes twice in 2003 and 2011 and now faces a possible two-year sentence.
Pace University law professor Bennett Gershman, who believes Davis should step down, predicts the judge will hand down a four- to six-month sentence.
Davis' attorneys are hoping for just probation for the 76-year-old mayor.
Davis told News 12 that he has no plans to step down. If he serves a prison term, the Mount Vernon City Council president would take over.
His sentencing date is scheduled for Jan. 26.
