An Atlanta man is facing charges after officials say he tried to smuggle drugs into the country in bottles of rum.
Customs and borders protection officers say Wilton Sinclair, 35, tried to smuggle 18 pounds of liquid cocaine inside the bottles. Sinclair had arrived at the airport in New York on a flight from Guyana.
According to the criminal complaint, customs officers noticed that the liquid in the bottles had an unusual chemical odor and that it was a "thick syrup-like substance inconsistent with rum."
Officials estimate the drugs to be worth more than $300,000.
