Croton-on-Hudson officials are issuing a new warning about an increase of suspicious individuals going door-to-door.
"A little shocking. Definitely something that you don't expect to hear around here," said resident Andrew Gruttadaro.
"I'm always suspicious of solicitors," said resident Robert Wilson. Village officials received a report about the suspicious solicitors on Wells Avenue this Tuesday.
"They were saying that they were a solicitor and asking some probing questions that made a resident feel uncomfortable, about what time their time of work was and when they were usually home," said Bryan Healy, Croton-on-Hudson village manager. Some Wells Avenue neighbors told News 12 that they also had people knock on their doors this week. But they're unsure if they were scammers. "I was like, 'Give me your card, give me your card,' and he never did. He said he'd drop one off and never dropped one off and hours later, a cop was at our door saying that people were pulling scams," said Gruttadaro. Gruttadaro says this person did not ask about what time he worked or when he would be home.
"I think my back would have gone up a little bit had he, but he was definitely a little persistent," Gruttadaro said. Another neighbor said the same. "Somebody knocked on our door. I was not home for it, but it's always a little nerve-wracking," said Wilson. Village officials say it's important to keep doors locked and always look through a doorbell camera, if possible, before opening the door.
"Parents should always just go over with their kids what to do if a stranger knocks on the door when they're not home," said Healy.
Village officials say residents should report any suspicious solicitors to the police department.
