Nassau County officials say it will take a few more days to repair a broken sewer line along a section of Grand Avenue in Baldwin.

The damaged sewer line has caused sewage to leak into the backyards of some residents' homes.

"Just a rough start to summer," says Tashawn Caesar, one of the homeowners affected by the sewage. "As a homeowner, I'm really, really disappointed that we're going through this."

Crews worked through the night to clean up the mess and fix the broken line near Grand Avenue and Lorenz Avenue.

Nassau County officials say the aging sewer line corroded and developed cracks. The road then collapsed and opened a massive sinkhole.

They also say they tried to stop it from going into Milburn Creek and are working to pump the sewage elsewhere.

Jasmine Rebori says she woke up with sewage in her yard but is more concerned about the creek.

"Makes me worry about the environment, makes me worried about the contamination that can happen there," Rebori says. "Also, a lot of kids that live around here and they appreciate the preserve in the creek."

Due to continuing work, all southbound lanes on Grand Avenue are closed and blocked between St. Luke Place and Florence Street. Detours are also being provided.

Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman says the long-term solution is to replace aging infrastructure, which will require help from the federal government.

"They just passed a $1.6 trillion infrastructure bill," Blakeman says. "We put in our request. We haven't seen a nickel yet."

The county executive says they are experiencing some delays in getting some parts for the repairs due to supply chain issues.

He says crews will work 24/7 until the repairs are done.
