Charles Carnes, the Town of Crawford’s longtime supervisor, has resigned mid-term citing a desire to spend more time with family.

He told News 12 he officially stepped down last Thursday following his wife’s retirement and ahead of their daughter’s wedding.

Carnes’ resignation comes amid his 12th two-year term.

The town board appointed Deputy Supervisor Michael Menendez as interim supervisor. Carnes says Menendez will need to run for election later this year to hold onto the seat.

Carnes says he felt it’s time to “pass the torch” to someone else.

News 12 reached out to Menendez for comment but hasn’t heard back.

The Town of Crawford Police Department issued a statement regarding the resignation on its Facebook page wishing Carnes well.

“We want to thank him for his years of support and commitment to making the Town of Crawford a safe and great place to live and work.”
