New York State Police believe dense fog caused several tractor-trailers and cars to crash on I-84 East in Port Jervis on Tuesday around 10:40 a.m.
The incident closed both sides of the highway which connects Orange County, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey for several hours.
A four-mile stretch of I-84 in Orange County from the Pennsylvania state line near Exit 1 into Port Jervis at Exit 4 (Mountain Road) reopened around 6:30 p.m.
The westbound lanes reopened around 2 p.m.
Both sides were initially closed to allow emergency vehicles to get to the scene and to reroute drivers.
Several drivers sustained minor injuries and were taken to local hospitals.
Traffic had been heavy on the surrounding local roads and backed up into Pennsylvania and the New Jersey area.
The Orange County Office of Emergency Management had issued a driving alert for reduced visibility because of the fog on Tuesday morning.
State Police are still investigating.
