Cortlandt officials are divided over a major project that could transform an undeveloped portion of town.

The Cortlandt Town Board is looking at about 40 acres of property and woodlands across the street from the New York Presbyterian Hudson Valley Hospital.

It will be voting on whether or not to rezone the land into a "medical oriented district," basically building on the land to encourage economic expansion near the hospital.

If the board votes yes, two developers who own the properties plan on building rental apartments, senior housing, retail spaces, a hotel, medical offices and outdoor trails.

According to the breakdown of the plans, the developers would invest $3 million in traffic improvements along Route 202 to make driving conditions better and safer.

It was standing room only at a town hall on the project, where people came to learn about the plan, as well as voice any concerns they had.

Many were concerned about destroying the habitat of wildlife, an increase in taxes and congestion.

The county Planning Department says the plan will bring not only construction jobs, but also permanent jobs and annual tax revenues upward of $4 million for the town and school district.
