Westchester County correction officers and inmates came together for a good cause: helping sick children and their families.

The Westchester County Jail and the Maria Fareri Children's Hospital share the same Valhalla campus. On Thursday, they shared a common mission to provide care and comfort to the patients and families of the hospital.

As part of its charity and community outreach initiative, the correction officers union donated hospitality kits for families and inmates sent along dozens of handmade blankets.

The jail's crochet program has been around for decades, and is now spearheaded by Assistant Warden Lafonda Spaulding. She says the blankets are a labor of love for the inmates who want to use their time productively

"It gives them pride to know they can contribute to society and to children, it's rewarding," says Spaulding.

Hospital officials say the blankets and toiletries will be put to immediate use and the patients will know exactly where they came from.
