Police have identified the shooting victim found in Cornwall as retired NYPD officer Bryant Furchak, of New Windsor.
Furchak, 44, was discovered fatally shot near his car on Church Street late Sunday night.
State police say a weapon believed to be used in the shooting belonged to Furchak and was recovered at the scene. Investigators have not released the autopsy results and are still investigating whether or not foul play was involved. They are also looking into the possibility that the shooting was a suicide.
Furchak was a former member of the New York National Guard and had at least one deployment to Iraq from 2004-2005 with the First Battalion 69th infantry. He left the guard in 2011 after putting in 20 years of service.
People living along Church Street say Furchak was visiting over the weekend for a wedding.
While state police investigators continue looking for answers, they don't think there is any threat to the public.
State troopers are asking anyone with information on Furchak's death to call their Bureau of Criminal Investigation Unit in Montgomery.
