Westchester County lawmakers have approved new wage protections aimed at making pay more equitable for construction workers on county‑leased job sites.

The County Board of Legislators passed the measure unanimously Monday night, 17 to 0.

The new rules extend fair wage protections to workers on properties leased by the county, an area lawmakers say had not previously carried the same guarantees as county‑owned sites.

Legislature Chairman Vedat Gashi says the gap came to light only after officials learned that some projects directed and paid for by the county were not providing prevailing wages.

“This is a problem that we wouldn’t have known about by ourselves,” Gashi said. “It’s only because we were told that there are projects where the county is directing the work and paying for the work, but somehow prevailing wages weren’t being paid.”

Lawmakers say the new protections are intended to close that gap and ensure consistent standards across county projects.
