Concerns are being raised about the forced sale and relocation of the Connecticut Sun after claims the team was moved despite higher offers to keep it in the region.
Sen. Richard Blumenthal said the WNBA illegally blocked competing proposals that would have relocated the franchise to either Boston or Hartford.
Blumenthal said the reported $300 million deal to sell and move the team to Houston was $25 million less than other offers.
He said the league rejected those proposals and forced the team to leave Connecticut.
“I’m calling for an investigation by the Department of Justice into the anti‑competitive potential violations of our antitrust law by the WNBA,” Blumenthal said.
He said the move would harm fans, local businesses and the state’s economy.
The relocation of the Connecticut Sun is scheduled to take effect next year.
