The federal government is stepping in to crack down on fake school threats in Orange County.
Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney issued a warning to any so-called "swatters" responsible for terrorizing the Middletown school district over the past few months.
Maloney has introduced legislation that would make false threats to student safety a federal offense and an act of domestic terrorism.
Police say the threatening calls have been computer-generated via websites that protect user identities, but appeals on allowing anonymity are being made to the FCC.
Middletown has had 12 swatting incidents this school year, each of which have led to lockdowns.
The district has taken steps to stop swatting, including upgrades to its telephone system that require calls to be traced.
