Con Edison was able to fully restore power to more than 500 customers nearly 17 hours after an underground transformer blew on Monday night.

Both apartment units and businesses downtown were without power and air conditioning for half of Tuesday on one of the hottest days of the year so far.

Officials said the utility crews restored most of the power overnight by rerouting its electrical feeds remotely.

Village Manager Stuart Rabin called it a collaborative effort between Port Chester, the utilities and construction crews to avoid a much bigger issue on such a hot day.

"It's an all-team effort and it's definitely showing," he said. "We're seeing that our utility partners are bouncing back, their crews are getting out here, they're making the investment where they need to have a response and we're making the investment here in the village for our residents."

On Tuesday, crews dug into Westchester Avenue, removed the old transformer and replaced it with a new one. Police monitored the intersection because the traffic signals were still out.

Still, the hours-long power outage took a toll on many of the small, local businesses downtown.

"We pretty much lost all our morning rush and some of our inventory due to the power outage and I'm not sure when we're going to be back up and running," PortRush Coffee employee Leslie Martinez said.
