Dozens of Yonkers senior citizens were left in the dark Tuesday after flooding caused Con Edison to turn off their power.
More than 100 seniors live at the Saint Casimir Building in Yonkers, where water levels rose so high the power company deemed it unsafe to keep the power on. Electricity needs to be shut off when electrical panels get wet because a fire could start, Eastchester Fire Chief Mike Grogan said.
Some senior residents left the facility to stay with relatives. The American Red Cross is providing hot meals to those residents who have stayed. Red Cross officials said they'd continue to help those in need as long as it takes, and volunteers will be on call for at least the next two weeks.
