Commuters say that Connecticut should reconsider its proposal to put up toll booths along the New York-Connecticut border on I-95.

Sen. Chuck Schumer says it's essential that New York speak up now because Connecticut is scheduled to release a study on the proposed tolls next month.

"If New York's concerns are not taken into account, I'll be urging the Federal Highway Administration not to greenlight this effort which they have to do," he said.

Schumer says the tolls would clog up traffic all the way down the highway to local roads in Port Chester and Rye.

Connecticut Transportation Department numbers show that 140,000 cars cross the New York and Connecticut border there every day. About14,000 cars would be diverted to local roads should toll booths go up.

Connecticut state Sen. Scott Frantz says that drivers seeking to avoid the tolls will cause "backups and mayhem."

Schumer suggests putting tolls further up into the state to make a Connecticut toll a Connecticut problem.
