There are mixed reactions over the proposed expansion of the Empire City Casino in Yonkers.

A public hearing was held Tuesday evening in front of the MGM Empire City Community Advisory Committee.

It was a chance for residents to weigh in on the proposal to renovate and expand the casino.

"It's going to bring a lot of jobs," said one man during the meeting.

"The buses are packed, it's a living nightmare," said someone during the hearing.

The redevelopment project would include a renovation and expansion of the current gaming area, three full-service restaurants, a parking garage and a new entertainment venue.

"Restaurants, a 5,000-seat arena and an expansion on the property but more importantly, it's going to mean additional jobs, it's going to mean additional funding for our schools," said Yonkers City Councilman John Rubbo.

Officials with MGM Resorts, who own the casino submitted the commercial casino license application back in June.

"I think it's good for the economy," said Yonkers resident Joseph Carpenella.

While some residents and business owners are on board, others have questions and concerns.

"Traffic issues, and crime issues and pollution," said a Yonkers resident during the hearing.

City leaders say many of the concerns are being addressed and they will continue to monitor them.

The MGM Empire City Community Advisory Committee will be weighing in Sept. 30.

That's when a vote is expected on whether to advance the project for commercial casino consideration.
