Gun violence took center stage for Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton during an event on Long Island Monday.
"If anything else were killing 33,000 people a year, we would be mobilized," Clinton said during the event at the Landmark theater in Port Washington.
"Most of the guns that are used in crimes and violence and killings in New York come from out of state," said Clinton. "The state that has the highest per capita number of those guns that end up committing crimes in New York come from Vermont."
Clinton said she wants to put an end to loopholes that allow criminals to purchase guns.
Meanwhile, Sen. Bernie Sanders (D-Vermont) spoke to a packed crowd in Albany, where 2,000 people couldn't fit inside the venue. Sanders didn't speak about guns, but he did remind his supporters that his campaign is making strides.
"This is a campaign that has the momentum. This is a campaign that has won eight out of the last nine caucuses and primaries," said Sanders.
Recent polls now have Clinton leading Sanders in New York by 11 points.
New York's presidential primary is April 19. The state has 291 Democratic delegates up for grabs in the primary.
