Authorities around the state are enforcing the use of seat belts Memorial Day weekend, and those who aren't properly buckled up could face a fine.

The enforcement is part of the annual "Click It or Ticket” campaign.

According to the National Highway Transportation Safety Authority, many Americans understand the life-saving value of a seat belt, with the national use rate at over 90 percent.  However, data from 2015 showed more than 27 million people weren't properly restrained.

It’s not just drivers who are getting tickets: people in the passenger seats and back seats also need to be properly restrained.

This week in New Windsor, officers cited six adults for not wearing a seat belt during a four-hour crackdown.
