(AP) - All New York City schoolchildren can get freeswine flu shots under Mayor Michael Bloomberg's plan to contain thevirus this fall and winter.
Bloomberg and officials from the city's health, schools andemergency departments are set to announce the preparedness strategylater Tuesday.
No child will be required to get the vaccine, which is not yetavailable but expected in mid- to late October. It will beoptional, and offered to both public and private school students.
Other elements of the city's plan include tracking flulikeillness at emergency rooms and posting that and other data on a newflu Web site.
The city will also produce a daily report on public schoolabsenteeism and schools reporting five or more cases of flulikeillness.
