The City of Yonkers is stepping in to run the Nepperhan Community Center after a report found the finances have been mishandled.
Mayor Mike Spano pledges to keep the vital community hub alive after its IRS tax-exempt status and accreditation was revoked to disqualify the city-owned building from any grants.
A Yonkers inspector general investigation uncovered financial mismanagement. Employee paychecks bounced, $200,000 of utility bills went unpaid and financial records were mishandled, according to the report.
Spano says the Parks Department, Office of Aging, and other city agencies will step in to keep programs running until a new reputable nonprofit board is formed.
