An 11-year-old boy was fatally shot at a Newburgh home on Thursday, according to police.
An official source says the child was playing with other children when a gun went off, striking the victim in the head around 8 a.m.
Police say they found him dead upon arriving at 184 North Miller St.
Officials have yet to confirm how the children acquired the gun.
Earlier this morning, all City of Newburgh schools were placed under a secure lockout as a precaution, but the district now says the lockout has been lifted.
The district released a statement addressing the lockout. It read in part, “a secure lockout protocol is used to secure buildings and grounds during incidents that may pose an imminent concern outside the school… The district is working closely with local law enforcement to support their investigation. The Critical Incident Management (CISM) team is meeting and will be providing support as needed.”
Neighbors say they are distraught. One mother told News 12’s Ben Nandy that her family and children were close with the boy.
A basketball coach also stated that he was planning on taking the victim and other boys in the neighborhood out to eat.
