The celebration of Black History Month continues in Mount Vernon with students putting their knowledge of the subject to the test.
The 18th annual "Black History Challenge" is designed to encourage youth from different backgrounds to learn more about Black history.
Teams from local middle schools, high schools and after-school programs came together Thursday night to demonstrate their knowledge of history through a friendly competition.
"This is to let the young people know that history is important. It's not just Black history -- it's American history. We hope everyone will come out, learn something new and spread the word about the history," said Dena Williams, deputy director of the Mount Vernon Youth Bureau.
The teams of students were required to answer specific questions on Black history.
Winning team members received trophies and prizes, including retail gift cards.
