Eight new Mount Vernon firefighters will be on the job starting early next year.
City leaders swore in the group Thursday amid staffing concerns in the fire department.
For years, there has been friction between the fire department and the mayor's office over what the mayor calls abuse of sick time by firefighters.
Neighboring departments also say Mount Vernon has abused the "mutual aid" system for years, calling for help on even small fires because Mount Vernon has been so chronically understaffed.
The hope is the new firefighters will breathe much-needed new life into the department and the city itself.
Fire officials say the new firefighters won't be on the job until January, after they finish their training at the academy.
