The City Council elected its first woman and openly gay person as its new speaker Wednesday.
Christine Quinn was elected unanimously by her peers. The Manhattan Democrat was also nominated and the motion was seconded by two of her former challengers. Quinn says she wants to strengthen the council?s voice during budget negotiations. She also supports extending council member term limits to three terms instead of the current two.Quinn replaces Gifford Miller who was forced out due to term limits.
