The Maria Fareri Children's Hospital is honoring a child who was born premature and given a second chance at life.
Five-year-old Eli Carson Whittaker has been named Grand Marshal for the hospital's 12th Annual Go the Distance Walk and Family Fun Day. The fun-filled event is the hospital's biggest fundraiser each year.
Eli had several major medical complications, which challenged his survival. Eli, who was born 14 weeks premature, spent the first four months of his life at the hospital.
Now he's showing everyone how to overcome and thrive. Hospital vice president Linda Hurwitz says Eli is an inspiration. "This celebration for Eli really tells kids how to celebrate the joy of growing up and the joy of being healthy," says Hurwitz.
Today, Eli warmed up for his grand marshal role by leading a parade through his school, the Summit Park School in New City. And while Eli is a young man of few words, his mom Brittany Anderson is overwhelmed by the honors. "He's been through a tough battle and his stay at the hospital. This is just proof you know, he's made it through," says Anderson.
