Two suspects are in custody after leading NYPD officers on a chase that ended in a crash in Mount Vernon.
The crash happened at West Fourth Street and South Eighth Avenue around 6 p.m.
NYPD officials say the pursuit began when officers tried to pull over a car for speeding and the driver took off.
The chase started in the Bronx, according to Mount Vernon Mayor Richard Thomas, as NYPD officers tried to catch the silver Nissan driving at exceedingly high speeds.
Within minutes, the chase ended when the car collided into two other vehicles.
The driver and front seat passenger were taken into custody. Four people, in total, were in the car.
A baby is in stable condition and a woman, believed to be the child's mother, is in critical condition.
"We want to make sure our streets are safe and well-lit so this doesn't happen, but this tragic accident seems to be a case of reckless driving," Thomas says.
Officials don't know the relationship between the driver and his passengers.
