Candlelight vigil held for Spring Valley football player who died in car crash
Spring Valley is mourning and praying after a horrific car crash over the weekend killed one teen and left another clinging to life.
The community gathered for a candlelight vigil on the high school football field Tuesday to remember 19-year-old Rashid Hopson and to pray for 18-year-old Ashawn Duncan.
The two were passengers in a car that rear-ended another vehicle on the state Thruway in West Nyack Sunday morning.
Their car drove off the road, broke through a guardrail and dropped down a 40-foot ditch, according to state police.
Hopson died at the scene. Duncan is at Nyack Hospital being treated in the ICU.
Three other teens in the car were treated for minor injuries. The driver of the second vehicle was uninjured.
Hopson and Duncan both graduated from Spring Valley High School last year and were standout football players.
A GoFundMe for Hopson has raised nearly $15,000 to cover his funeral expenses.
