Some Bronx and city public housing residents may soon be paying more in rent as the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) tries to end years of deficits.
According to city leaders, the NYCHA is approximately $170 million in debt due to various reasons, including higher utility costs and different housing projects. The NYCHA says it has come up with a plan to end its deficits. Part of the plan includes getting help from Mayor Bloomberg. The other part of the plan involves increasing the rent for one in every four NYCHA residents.
Some residents rallied Thursday after hearing about the rent increases. Some say they are already upset about new replacement and utility fees set to take effect on May 1. NYCHA officials say they will be sending out a letter to all residents detailing the upcoming changes.
