Some Bronx parents are upset over the decision made by a local day care center to cut its school meal program.
The administration of the Mosholu Montefiore Community Center sent out a letter to parents at Co-Op City, informing them that the school has decided to trim its budget by cutting its free breakfast and lunch program.
?By the time I get home and get settled, I guess I have to start preparing breakfast and lunch for the next day,? says Keisha Howard, whose twins attend the daycare. ?It?s a whole other routine added on to my routine.?
Some parents say they would rather pay the daycare extra than provide their own food.
?I believe that a reasonable increase in tuition is better than having parents bring their own food to school,? says DQ Senanu, whose son is also enrolled in Mosholu.
Janine Nelson says the school?s decision is forcing her and many other parents to face a tough decision.
?If I knew the food was going to be taken away, I probably would have considered another center first,? she says. ?But I don?t want to uproot her and start all over because she?s just a baby and the adjustment is difficult.?
The school administrator says she would be happy to talk to concerned parents, but the center will not revoke its decision to cut the program. Come September, parents will have to provide their children with food and drink that would be refrigerated and served at lunchtime.
