Emergency crews across Westchester rushed to the scene of two separate brush fires Wednesday.
One of the fires burned across 4 acres of land near a residential area off Old Lake Street in the Silver Lake section of West Harrison.
Lake and Old Lake streets were shut down to traffic as firefighters from six departments pulled hoses and drove equipment into the steep, wooded area. Firefighters also had to face challenges of 30 to 40 mph winds.
"What's hampering this fire is the wind. Trying to get county aviation out here, but the helicopter is grounded at the moment due to high winds," said West Harrison Fire Department Chief Pat Galluzzo.
People living in the area were asked to keep their windows closed as smoke blew debris around the neighborhood. Engine companies kept an eye on homes, but authorities say residents shouldn't be concerned.
Another fire affected 10 acres across the northern section of Todd Road in Goldens Bridge. Some of the brush was dangerously close to some homes.
No injuries were reported.
