A Brooklyn man is sharing his triumphant story after overcoming multiple sclerosis.

March is Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Month.

"I was having problems keeping up with everybody; over the summer I started experiencing difficulties in walking. I couldn't walk in a straight line, and every time I tried to ride a bike I would fall," Jamil Cruz says.

Cruz was all set to enroll in the Navy back in 2012 when he started experiencing symptoms during training camp.

"The only thing I could think about was, I told everybody I was going to the Navy, and now the Navy is telling me I can't,” he says.

After his doctors diagnosed him, they worked with him on various treatments that would soon change the course of his life.

Still, Cruz did not allow his prognosis to define him.

Now 28 years old, Cruz is currently in remission and graduated from Brooklyn College with a degree in Psychology.

He also works as a counselor for children with disabilities.

“The thing that I focus on every day is to be better than that person, not somebody that I know, just a person that I was yesterday,” he says.
