Sunset Park in Brooklyn is a great place to meet dogs, and was a good place for dog owners to let their pups run free. The gated-off area of the park was suddenly padlocked by the city.
According to Parks Department sources, they gated off the area after they saw the grass was run down. They say the grass needs to be healthy so it can absorb water and stop water running down to the sidewalk.
According to park sources, there are no plans to make this a dog-run or create one because the park has off-leash hours before 9 a.m. and after 9 p.m.
Some who feel the area is needed say the locked gate opens a door for collaboration. This has been a long standing issue before the padlocked gates.
In 2021, there was a petition for a dog run at the park. That had just more than 1,000 signatures.
