Friday marked the first day of summer and the start of consecutive warm days in New York City.
The hot weather can be very dangerous for those not prepared.
“Today, we are facing a very dangerous situation a heat wave is bearing down on our state and I need you to take this seriously because it is the No. 1 cause of weather-related deaths is extreme heat,” said Gov. Kathy Hochul.
With temperatures rising, Bronx residents are finding different ways to stay safe in the heat.
At Van Courtlandt Park, Warren is doing his part to help others stay cool by selling ice cold drinks.
“A lot of times they run on the track, they be in the park. They don’t want to walk all the way back to the store. So I’m trying to make it accessible for them,” Warren said.
Warren stocks his wagon with bottled water and Kool-Aid, offering refreshments for anyone trying to beat the heat.
Experts say staying hydrated is key during hot weather — and it’s best to avoid caffeine and alcohol, which can lead to dehydration.
But for Warren, hot days are good for business.
“I’m going to be grinding,” he said. “That’s good money right there. I look at those days as good money.”
But not everyone is embracing the heat.
Stefanos, from Fieldston, said he plans to take a different approach as the forecast calls for 90-degree temperatures next week.
“I’m going to try to stay indoors as much as possible in the A/C. Get some shade in the trees and try not to be out in the sun too much,” he said.
Health officials remind the public to watch for signs of heat stroke, including trouble breathing, a rapid heartbeat, nausea and dizziness. Staying in the shade, drinking plenty of fluids, and avoiding strenuous outdoor activity during peak heat hours can help prevent this.
Stay inside with the A/C on and if you don’t have an A/C, cooling centers will be open.
