Bronx Councilman Ritchie Torres wants more security at NYCHA buildings
A Bronx politician wants to increase security at city housing complexes across the city, but it could cost taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars.
Councilman Ritchie Torres is pushing for fully loaded security systems, including surveillance cameras, new locks and intercom systems at all NYCHA buildings.
According to NYCHA, it would cost more than $500 million, but Torres is hoping the City Council will set aside money in the budget to make the complexes a safer place to live.
Many residents think added security is necessary at any cost, but critics argue that the money shouldn't go toward developments that already rely on assistance. Some also think that criminals will find ways to ruin the expensive safety equipment.
