At least half a dozen immigrant families are displaced after they were forced out of their Yonkers apartments due to a broken boiler.

Manuel Flores says he and his family came home Saturday night to find out that they were locked out of their apartment on New Main Street.  They learned that the reason they were locked out was because a boiler broke down, forcing the city to condemn dozens of apartments.

Flores, his wife and two little girls went from the Yonkers PAL to a nearby hotel. The city of Yonkers tells News 12 that the building's landlord paid for the hotel. Checkout was at 11 a.m. Monday and Flores is now left with nowhere to go.

According to Diana Sanchez, a board member of the Yonkers Sanctuary Movement, the Westchester County Department of Social Services will be able to help families with children who were evicted from that building by providing shelter this week.  Those without children may be out of luck, though.

"They can't qualify for any deposit,” she says.

Sanchez says this is because as immigrants they need the proper documentation, which has been left behind in a condemned building that may not be fixed until the end of the week at the earliest.

A hearing about the boiler repair is scheduled for Tuesday morning.
