Bridge renaming marks lasting tribute for veterans
Officials from the New York State Bridge Authority unveiled a special salute at the Bear Mountain Bridge in Fort Montgomery Monday to honor veterans on Veterans Day.
The bridge is now called the Purple Heart Veteran Memorial Bridge. It's meant to honor the men and women who lost their lives or were wounded during service.
The ceremonial renaming was spearheaded by Sen. Bill Larkin and signed into law by Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Oct. 2.
"There's a lot of discourse. The one thing we are all united about is how we feel about our veterans and our Purple Heart veterans," said Joe Ruggiero, of the New York State Bridge Authority.
