WHAT TO KNOW:
  • Less windy, lower fire spread potential today.
  • A warm start to the work week.
  • Sunny today and tomorrow with highs in the 60s today in many spots, upper 50s for Tuesday.
  • Cool and more clouds for the middle and end of the work week.
  • Rain is unlikely the next few days.
It's a mild start to the week with less wind and more sunshine. Today is the pick of the week, and one of the nicest days of the month, but it doesn't last.
The latest on fire potential
Conditions have improved since the start of the brush fire in Suffolk County last Saturday afternoon. When the brush fire started, wind gusts reached 43 mph at Westhampton Beach with sustained winds of 28 mph. Sunday was less breezy, but it was gusty with wind speeds of 32 mph. The air today is warmer and drier than Sunday, but it's not as dry as Saturday and wind speeds will be light. We anticipate wind speeds 10-15 mph most of the afternoon.
Mild for the next few days
Today is the warmest day this week, and in some neighborhoods it could be the warmest so far this year. Highs will reach 60 degrees on most of the island. Neighborhoods on the south shore within a 2-3 miles of the water will stay in the 50s, but it will be sunny and pleasant there too. The warmest spots will be interior parts of Nassau and Western Suffolk County and along the north shore. We could hit the mid-60s.
Tonight expect temperatures to drop into the mid or upper 30s with patchy fog. Tuesday morning will warm up quickly with sunny skies returning. Temperatures will be in the 50s for most of the island.
Changes midweek
Clouds build starting Wednesday and high temperatures will be near 50 degrees. Sprinkles and showers are possible on Thursday, but little to no measurable rain is expected. High temperatures will be in the 40s. Friday and Saturday will feature clouds and sun with a stray shower but otherwise mild with highs in the 50s.
The next storm?
Sunday could feature gusty showers, and the potential for a few heavy downpours. Highs will reach near 60 degrees.
