Dozens of people gathered at Tibbetts Brook Park on Saturday to attend the Break the Silence on Domestic Violence 5K Run/Walk.
It was organized by Westchester County Legislator Shanae Williams.
Attendees raised awareness, remembered victims and honored survivors of domestic violence. Williams said the 5K was more than just a race.
"We all know someone who has been through this situation. My sister is a survivor of domestic violence. When she was pregnant with her first and second child, her partner abused her, put her in the hospital, and it was very dramatic for our family, but we never talked about it. So as a community, we need to start raising this issue," Williams said.
Williams said the event raised at least $2,000 for the YWCA of Yonkers.
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
