The race for New York's 16th Congressional District ran through Mount Vernon on the final day of campaigning before Primary Election Day.
On Monday, both Rep. Jamaal Bowman and Westchester County Executive George Latimer spent time in the city for a final push to get voters to the polls.
Bowman held a rally at Hartley Park, joined by New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortes and Massachusetts Rep. Ayanna Pressley. The trio are among the most outspoken progressive members of the House Democratic Party.
"We are building a new nation that works for every single person in our country," Bowman said.
Earlier in the day and only a few blocks away, Latimer was joined by local clergy members from Westchester and the Bronx.
"It's important to show that the coalition that we put together in my campaign is widespread," Latimer said.
Both candidates spoke out about how critical voter participation will be in this race.
"Every community, every combination of people are important," Latimer said.
"We've been knocking on doors and making calls and sending text messages relentlessly," Bowman said.
According to the Westchester Board of Elections, 21,329 people voted early countywide during the early voting period ending Sunday, June 23. Four years ago during a presidential primary cycle, only 10,406 cast early ballots.
While the two Democrats were courting votes, the picture in November started to come into focus.
Former Scarsdale Mayor and pediatrician, Dr. Miriam Levitt Flisser, announced on Monday she was certified as the Republican candidate in November. Flisser lost to Bowman in a head-to-head race two years ago while collecting 35% of the vote.
“From inflation to border security, to crime, to parental rights, our federal government has failed the American people," Flisser said in a statement. "We need a new voice in Washington who will stand up for our values."
