One year after a boating accident claimed the lives of two people on the Hudson River, boaters say safety remains a big concern.

The area around the Tappan Zee Bridge is a work zone, with construction barges that are considered a hazard for boaters. Marina owner Roger Schneider says with the barges circling the bridge, and the sheriff and state police nearby, it is impossible for boaters to approach the bridge.

On July 26 last year, bride-to-be Lindsey Stewart and her fiance's best man Mark Lennon were killed after a boat they were riding in collided with a barge near the bridge. The boat's driver, Jojo John, pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree manslaughter. The investigation showed he had been boating while intoxicated.

Brian Conybeare, Gov. Andrew Cuomo's special advisor on the new Tappan Zee Bridge, says officials have spent the last year working on ways to enhance boater safety in the wake of the accident. Restrictions have been established on where and when boats can go near the construction zone, but boaters say more needs to be done to show what areas are off-limits.

John faces two years in prison when he is sentenced on Sept. 16.
