A tireless advocate in Rockland County just scored another victory in her quest to highlight some local Black history that few people know about.
Researcher Virginia Norfleet and village officials are building a statue of Harriet Tubman in Haverstraw. She says the town should be a destination for anyone who wants to know about Black history.
Norfleet founded the Haverstraw African American Connection which promotes local Black history, and recently highlighted the 238 slaves who lived in the local area in the late 1700s.
Norfleet says she would like to have the Beacon of Hope in time for this year's Juneteenth celebration.
